Puppy Grooming

Your puppy's first groom should set the tone for life.

We've done thousands of first grooms for Tampa puppies. The whole point is to make it short, gentle, and so positive your pup walks back into our van eagerly next month - not a screaming wrestling match at a busy salon.

Your puppy's first groom should set the tone for life.

What's included

  • Slow, supervised intro to the van and equipment
  • Warm bath with puppy-safe tear-free shampoo
  • Light blow-dry (low speed, low noise)
  • Tidy trim of face, paws, sanitary area
  • First nail trim with lots of praise and treats
  • Ear check and gentle clean
  • Take-home tips for at-home brushing & desensitization

Why the first groom matters more than people think.

Most adult dogs who hate the groomer had a stressful or scary first experience. The salon was loud, the dryer was hot, they were left in a cage for hours. We see those dogs every week in Tampa and we work hard to undo the trauma. The easier path: do the first groom right. A quiet van, one-on-one attention, treats every two minutes, and we stop the second your puppy says they're done. That's it. That's the entire secret.

When should you book your puppy's first groom?

We recommend around 12-16 weeks, after the second round of vaccinations. Even if your puppy doesn't need a haircut yet, we strongly suggest a bath, blow-dry, and nail trim to get them used to the experience. Doodles, poodles, and any other curly-coat breed especially - start them young or you'll have a matted, miserable 10-month-old on your hands.

Breed-by-breed expectations for Tampa puppies.

Doodles and poodles need monthly grooming from 4 months on. Short-coat breeds (frenchies, beagles, labs) only need a bath and nails every 6-8 weeks. Double-coated breeds (huskies, shepherds, retrievers) need brushing all the time but only a real bath every 6 weeks. We'll set you up with a custom schedule the first time we meet.

What to expect on the day.

Have your puppy a little tired - a short walk or play session beforehand helps. Keep the energy calm during the handoff. We'll spend 5 minutes letting your pup explore the van before any equipment comes on. The whole appointment is usually 30 to 45 minutes; we send you a photo when they're done.

Common questions

How old does my puppy need to be?+

We recommend 12 weeks or older, after the second vaccine round. If you're not sure, send a photo and your vet's vaccination dates and we'll let you know.

What if my puppy is scared?+

That's normal and we plan for it. We go slow, use lots of treats, and don't push past their threshold. If we only get a bath and nails done the first time, that's still a win. We can finish the haircut next visit.

How often should I book after the first groom?+

Depends on coat. Doodles every 4-5 weeks. Most breeds every 6-8 weeks. We'll tell you exactly when to book your next appointment based on what we see.
